Once, Parvati devi, the wife of Lord Siva, inquired from her husband about the garland of skulls which adorn his neck.
She wanted to know from whose heads the skulls belong. Lord Siva replied that these were her (Parvati's) heads. Surprised and curious, she asked how was that? Lord Siva told her that because he loved her so much, each time she left her body; he took her head and put the skull on the garland around his neck. Satisfied, Parvati then told Lord Siva that it seems she has had many lifetimes, but he had not. Lord Siva said that was correct. She then inquired how he remains immortal. Lord Siva replied that he is immortal because he is always absorbed in the nectarean narration of Srimad-Bhagavatam.
Desiring to also attain immortality, Parvati devi asked Lord Siva to narrate Srimad-Bhagavatam to her. He agreed, under the condition that they select a private location, that there should be no other living entities present, and Parvati devi must be very attentive and not fall asleep.
